Saturday foursomes scorecards

Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie (Europe)
vs. Hal Sutton and Jeff Maggert (USA)

A classic match-play drama -- neither team led by more than a point and it was all-square through 16. Maggert made a crucial birdie putt on the 17th hole to give the Americans the lead, then he put his approach within a foot of the cup on No. 18 to seal the match. Montgomerie battled with fans, shaking his fist at the gallery after making a birdie putt for a halve at No. 6 and walking away from a putt when a fan took a flash photo at No. 9. He and Maggert exchanged birdie putts at 15, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. The Europeans weren't pleased after the match. "They need pumping up because they're losing and they're losing heavily," said Montgomerie. Added Lawrie, who was unhappy with the exuberance of Sutton and Maggert: "Their behavior was just ridiculous. I don't mind it when we've both played, but to do it before the next opponent hits a shot, then it's just not on. If it means that much to them, then all the best to them."

Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood (Europe)
vs. Jim Furyk and Mark O'Meara (USA)

The Americans failed to make a birdie in the alternate-shot format and were closed out when Clarke and Westwood won the ninth, 12th and 14th holes. O'Meara's first Ryder Cup appearance started well -- his par putt on No. 3 gave the U.S. a 1-up lead. But the Americans never challenged after that as Clarke and Westwood won for the second tme in three matches.

Miguel Angel Jimenez and Padraig Harrington (Europe)
vs. Tiger Woods and Steve Pate (USA)

A match the U.S. had to have -- and eventually got, but not without a huge struggle. The Americans needed an eagle at 14 -- Pate hit the green with his second shot; Woods made the putt -- and a serious save at 17, when Woods delivered a 6-foot putt to save par. On 18, Woods drove into the rough, but Pate hit a clean recovery shot onto the green to close out the match. Pate, who didn't play Friday, and Woods birdied the first four holes and built a 3-up lead that nearly grew to four. But Jimenez and Harrington closed the gap to one by No. 8 and evened the match when the Americans bogeyed No. 11. "More than anything our personalities jelled really well," Woods said. "We both knew coming down the stretch that we needed this point to have a chance."

Jesper Parnevik and Sergio Garcia (Europe)
vs. Payne Stewart and Justin Leonard (USA)

Leonard's Ryder Cup nightmare continued as he and Stewart bogeyed three holes on the front side and two more on the back. The U.S. had a chance to get back in the match at 12, but Stewart missed a short par putt after the Europeans had posted a bogey. Meanwhile, Parnevik and Garcia cemented themselves as the top team in the Ryder Cup with their third win in as many matches together, despite the fact that they struggled at times (three bogeys, compared to a pair of birdies). What's more -- they're even starting to sound alike. "Jesper is unbelievable," said Garcia. "I am so confident that Jesper is going to hit good shots and make good putts -- it's just perfect." Said Parnevik: "Everytime I needed Sergio, he was there."
