Lee Westwood (Europe) vs. Tom Lehman (USA)
Lehman, a captain's pick, dominated Westwood with birdies at the fourth and fifth holes to build a 2-up lead. Westwood got back within a shot at No. 7 with a 10-foot birdie, but Lehman won the ninth, 10th and 13th holes to give the U.S. its first point. "That putt on 13 was huge," Lehman said. "I was really excited about that one."

Darren Clarke (Europe) vs. Hal Sutton (USA)
Sutton, the Americans' best player all week, didn't disappoint. Clarke chipped in for birdie at No. 1, but he bogeyed the third and fourth. When Sutton had a tap-in birdie after a brilliant approach at No. 6, the rout was on. At No. 12, Clarke bogeyed to give Sutton a 4-up lead. "He hit a great third shot there," Sutton said. "And making that putt in front of him was critical. That put it 4-up and you could kind of feel that any momentum he thought he had went away."

Jarmo Sandelin (Europe) vs. Phil Mickelson (USA)
Sandelin and Mickelson have a history, thanks to a spat at the 1996 Dunhill Cup. And with the American crowd applying the heat, Sandelin crumbled. He missed a 3-footer at No. 2, and saluted the cheering crowd. He hit a bad drive and made a bad second-shot decision at No. 3, losing that hole. Mickelson's lead was only one at the turn, but Sandelin bogeyed 10, 11 and 12 to end his chances. Mickelson, meanwhile, was steady and putted well for the second straight day. Mickelson and Sandelin didn't speak, though they did exchange a handshake at the end of the match and Mickelson seemed to bury the hatchet.

Jean Van de Velde (Europe) vs. Davis Love III (USA)
Van de Velde deserved better that he got, having sat out for the first two days. Instead, he drew Love, who responded with a drubbing. Love lost just one hole -- the third -- and won the last four holes with his own birdies at Nos. 10 and 11 and Van de Velde bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13. Even when Van de Velde got something going -- a long birdie putt at No. 6 -- Love matched it with a sizeable putt of his own. "I was in a no-win situation," Love said. "If I beat him, they say 'great playing.' If he beats me, it's pretty much a major upset. He played well ... I just outplayed him."

Andrew Coltart (Europe) vs. Tiger Woods (USA)
What seemed like a rout was close for the first six holes as Coltart hung with Woods. But the world's No. 1 player won Nos. 7, 8 and 9 to build a three-up lead and maintained it through No. 16. Woods holed a shot from off the green for a birdie at No. 8 and added his third straight birdie at the ninth. "I really felt like today I finally got what I deserved," Woods said. "I made a lot of great shots this week, but unfortunately I was going out with some losses."

Jesper Parnevik (Europe) vs. David Duval (USA)
Duval said he'd heard some heckling around the course as he struggled Friday and Saturday. There was none of it Sunday, as he buried Parnevik, who finally showed signs of fatigue. Duval was 6-up after nine holes and closed the Swede out on No. 14. Even on the holes he halved -- like No. 1 -- Duval was able to hit an 8-foot par putt on the back of a 12-footer Parnevik had just made. "I heard some things said yesterday that weren't particularly nice," Duval said. "But that turned around today. You could hear the roars and you knew we were coming back."

Padraig Harrington (Europe) vs. Mark O'Meara (USA)
The day's best match and, for a time, what seemed like the pivotal one. Harrington led 1-up after 12, but O'Meara tied him at No. 13 when Harrington missed a short par putt. At No. 14, Harrington had a chance to win the hole, but missed a downhill 3-footer. O'Meara survived hitting his tee shot in the bunker at the 16th with an up-and-down and survived No. 17 despite being short of the green after hitting his drive into the rough. But at No. 18, O'Meara hit his drive into a fairway bunker and pulled his approach left. Harrington won the hole -- and the match -- by hitting his approach 10 feet above the cup.

Miguel Angel Jimenez (Europe) vs. Steve Pate (USA)
Pate didn't play on Friday but ended up with two key points, including his relatively easy win over Jimenez. Pate never trailed and built his lead to 3-up on the 14th Jimenez double-bogeyed the relatively easy par-5. He also halved the 11th hole despite having to make an 8-foot par putt, just before Jimenez missed a 7-footer of his own. "Fortunately I was able to make the putts," Pate said. "I made three good putts and hit a lot of other good putts that just didn't go in."

Jose Maria Olazabal (Europe) vs. Justin Leonard (USA)
The absolute turning point. Leonard, winless in six Ryder Cup matches in his career coming in, trailed Olazabal 4-up after 11 holes. But Leonard won the next four in a row -- Olazabal made bogey at 12 and 13, Leonard made birdie at 14 and 15 -- to even the match. Then, at 17, with his ball at the base of the two-tiered green, he rammed in a 45-foot putt that, when Olazabal missed his putt moments later, clinched the cup for the Americans. "I'd like to say it's a good thing I didn't go home," he said, referring to NBC analyst Johnny Miller, who suggested Leonard do just that instead of playing in Saturday's afternoon matches.

Colin Montgomerie (Europe) vs. Payne Stewart (USA)
Montgomerie knew he needed to win the match by the time he teed off and built a 3-up lead through seven holes. But the match wasn't over -- Stewart won Nos. 8 and 9 with birdies, but Montgomerie got a shot back when Stewart bogeyed No. 12, missing an eight-footer. Stewart rallied again, winning Nos. 14 and 15, where he drained a 20-foot putt and Montgomerie missed. Montgomerie won it on 18 when Stewart missed the green and conceded the hole -- after the final result had already been determined.

Sergio Garcia (Europe) vs. Jim Furyk (USA)
Garcia never led as Furyk won in singles for the second straight Ryder Cup (he beat Nick Faldo in 1997). Furyk birdied No. 4 and, after Garcia evened the match at the sixth, won the eighth and ninth with birdies. He added a win at No. 11 with a par and at No. 12 with a birdie to build a 4-up lead. "I felt like I just needed to go out there and worry about my game and put the ball in play," Furyk said. "I hit every fairway today, I missed maybe one green, and I really just kept the pressure on him. He didn't make the putts like he did all week and I did make a few putts."

Paul Lawrie (Europe) vs. Jeff Maggert (USA)
Lawrie, the defending British Open champ, dominated Maggert, starting quickly with birdies at the second and fourth holes. He built he lead to 4-up after nine and closed the match out early. "I played poorly today and Paul played pretty well," Maggert said. "He never let me in the match." But by the time Lawrie finished his match, however, the Americans had virtually clinched the match.
