BOX SCORE
MESA, Arizona (Ticker) -- All eyes were on pitcher Kerry Wood in today's Grapefruit League split-squad game between the Chicago teams. In his first appearance following elbow surgery, Wood pitched a scoreless inning for the Cubs, who fell to the White Sox, 8-7. Wood, the 1998 Rookie of the Year, threw 15 pitches and allowed one hit. After Mike Caruso led off with a single for the first of his four hits, Wood retired Liu Rodriguez, Jeff Abbott and Paul Konerko on flyouts. Wood, 22, underwent surgery last April to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The hard-throwing righthander last pitched for the Cubs in Game Three of the 1998 National League Division Series against Atlanta. Sammy Sosa hit his eighth home run of the spring, a two-run shot, in the first inning for the Cubs. He went 3-for-3 with three RBI. The White Sox snapped a 7-7 tie with a run in the eighth. Craig Wilson led off the inning with a double off reliever Mark Guthrie and scored on a single by Greg Norton. Carlos Lee went 4-for-5 with three RBI for the White Sox.
