DENVER -- Colorado Rockies outfielder Larry Walker isn't worried about being left off the National League All-Star team. He just doesn't like the process used to select the team.
Despite having some of the best numbers in the NL, Walker wasn't selected by the fans or Arizona manager Bob Brenly.
Walker had a slight chance of earning the 30th spot on the team through online fan voting, but Atlanta center fielder Andruw Jones got that spot.
''I said that if I get picked to go to the All-Star Game I will honor the National League, I will honor the Colorado Rockies as a representative,'' Walker said. ''If I don't go, I'm going to be just as happy if I went because I'll get to go home and to be able to spend time with my family. Either way I'm satisfied with the result.''
Walker doesn't like the new Internet runoff to choose the 30th player.
''I think that 30th thing is stupid. I just happen to be one of the idiots in there,'' Walker said. ''It's a slap in the face, I think, to the guys. The fans could have picked any of the five guys (in the runoff) to go on. The manager could have picked any of those five guys to go on.
''Now it's kind of like, 'all right, we got one spot left open here ... you're in.' If you bypass two things then all of a sudden you get to go back. It just doesn't seem right.''
Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said Walker's numbers should have been enough to get him in no matter what system is used.
''The guy's put the numbers he's put up, he plays the defense he plays, and you'd like to think there's a spot for him,'' Hurdle said.
Walker's .341 average is second in the National League to teammate Todd Helton, who will start at first base in the All-Star game. Walker is third in RBI with 61, tied for ninth in home runs with 18 and fifth in runs scored with 56.
He leads the majors with 10 outfield assists.
''I guess we have a really, really good team in the National League this year,'' Hurdle said with a sly grin.
Hurdle suggested one way for Walker to get to the All-Star Game.
''I told him to just show up and see what happens,'' he said.
The All-Star Game is Tuesday in Milwaukee. |
