SEATTLE -- The Mariners have no plans to pursue Dusty Baker for the team's vacant managerial job, general manager Pat Gillick said Wednesday night. "No, we're not interested,'' Gillick said. He declined to elaborate.
There has been widespread speculation that Baker would be an attractive candidate for Seattle. The San Francisco Giants announced Wednesday that Baker wouldn't return as their manager next season.
On Tuesday, Gillick announced that the Mariners have selected four finalists in their effort to replace Lou Piniella: former Chicago Cubs manager Jim Riggleman, former Colorado manager Buddy Bell, Arizona bench coach Bob Melvin and Baltimore bench coach Sam Perlozzo.
The Seattle job opened when Piniella asked to be released from his contract after 10 seasons, citing a desire to be closer to his family in Florida. He was introduced as Tampa Bay's new manager last month. |
