GAME FLOW
TORONTO (AP) Vince Carter didn't even know about the record
before the game started, but by game's end he was the Toronto
Raptors' career scoring leader. Carter scored 38 points to surpass former teammate Doug Christie
in a 107-90 win over the New Jersey Nets on Friday night.
"I didn't even know about it. A few guys asked me about it
before the game -- I didn't know what was going on," said Carter,
who's in his third year with the six-year franchise. "But it's an
honor and it's fun and it feels even better to get the win."
Carter, who passed Christie on the scoring list in his third NBA
season, gave the Raptors their first four-game winning streak since
November.
The Raptors outscored the Nets 36-19 in the final quarter to
hand New Jersey its 11th straight road loss. Toronto outrebounded
New Jersey 54-31, including 17 on the offensive end.
"We know we're capable of scoring on the offensive end, but
sometimes we haven't done the job of stopping guys and we did
(both) tonight," said Carter, who had seven boards. "To win three
or four games in a row boosts your confidence."
Keon Clark had 16 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks in place
of Antonio Davis, who was ejected early in the game.
"It's just instinct to judge when the other guy lets the ball
go," Clark said. "We tried to make a statement and that it's all
about teamwork and you saw that."
Clark, who had his first double-double with the Raptors, set a
team record with five blocks in the second quarter.
"He's my sleeper of the year," said Stephon Marbury, who had
26 points and nine assists for the Nets. "I'll tell people about
him all the time. He made the difference in the game."
Charles Oakley led the Raptors with 15 rebounds and added eight
assists while Jerome Williams had 13 boards. Alvin Williams had 15
points.
"It's great to be a part of and to watch (Carter)," said new Raptor
Jerome Williams. "I just wanted to get some boards, set some
screens and keep the crowd involved."
Christie, who played for the Raptors for five years before being
traded in the offseason, held the record with 4,448 points. Oakley
broke Christie's rebounding record (1,448) in the previous game
Thursday at Atlanta.
Carter, needing 10 points to surpass Christie, took just one
quarter to snap the record on a long jumper with 50.9 seconds left
to narrow the Nets' lead to 26-22.
"(New Jersey) is a good team even though they don't have a
winning record," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We're
starting to play with more consistency."
Rookie Kenyon Martin had a career-high 26 points for New Jersey.
Although Marbury also had 26, he shot only 6-for-24.
"I knew I wasn't shooting the ball extremely well so I was
trying to attack the basket," Marbury said.
Toronto broke a 71-71 tie entering the fourth quarter by going
on a 10-0 run. Carter chased down a loose ball and drained a
3-pointer and then nailed another a minute later to open a 86-76
lead with 7:20 left.
"We need to be more aggressive," said Keith Van Horn, who had
18 points and seven rebounds. "We did a poor job of getting loose
balls and rebounds."
Davis' night lasted all of 3:37 before he was kicked out of the
game for arguing a call and receiving his second technical. Davis
almost elbowed Evan Eschmeyer in the face tugging for a loose ball
before picking up his second technical.
