TORONTO (AP) – The Vancouver Grizzlies were little more than
spectators at times during what probably was the last meeting
between Canada's NBA teams.
Vince Carter scored 24 points Sunday as the Toronto Raptors beat
Vancouver 102-92, the Grizzlies' ninth straight loss.
Vancouver owner Michael Heisley has until Monday to inform the
NBA where he wants to move the team. Memphis, Louisville, New
Orleans and Anaheim are the possibilities.
"We're definitely not focused as we could be," Vancouver's
Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. "We probably have some guys that have
gone home already, but that's what makes us a bad team."
Abdur-Rahim had 26 points for the Grizzlies, who finished their
road trip at 0-8. Vancouver fell to 20-52 overall.
"It doesn't matter to me where we go," Abdur-Rahim said. "We
grossly underachieved this year. Our team doesn't complement each
other."
Morris Peterson had 20 points, and Dell Curry 16 for Toronto,
which swept the two-game series with Vancouver this season and
improved to 7-4 overall against the Grizzlies since the two entered
the NBA together in 1995.
"If they could do it all over again, I think they should have
set things up a bit better, as far as the taxes and customs issues
because I think those are things players use as reasons for not
coming to Canada," Vancouver's Tony Massenburg said. "I've never
complained about being in Canada, but these are things that other
guys around the league get turned off by."
Carter had eight points as Toronto used an 18-3 run to take a
94-83 lead. The Grizzlies didn't get closer than nine points the
rest of the way.
Toronto outscored Vancouver 26-17 in the fourth quarter.
"We'll play where they put us," Vancouver's Mike Bibby said.
"We can't control anything about it so we don't worry about it."
Vancouver coach Sydney Lowe has said his team has been
distracted by the possible move.
"You hate to see a team relocate, but this a business and you
have to make money," Curry said.
Abdur-Rahim scored 19 points in leading Vancouver to a 52-50
lead at the half.
"I don't think it ever turned itself into a real rivalry,"
Abdur-Rahim said. "A true rivalry is when both teams play at a
high level. Toronto has gotten a lot better, but we are still a
pretty bad team."
Game notes
Neither Vancouver daily newspaper had a reporter covering
the game. ... The Grizzlies are expected to lose at least $40
million this season. ... Toronto's Chris Childs missed the game
with a sprained right index finger. ... Toronto outrebounded
Vancouver 50-39.
