O'Neal day-to-day with foot injury

NEW YORK -- Shaquille O'Neal sat out the Los Angeles Lakers' loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday because of a sore right foot, an injury that could keep him sidelined for a while.

O'Neal has plantar fasciitis of his right arch, making it difficult for him to push off the foot.

"It's something you can play through, but it's something that you have to get some relief from before you play through it. We'll see how it responds to treatment," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

It was the third missed game of the season for O'Neal, last season's MVP. Greg Foster started in his place as the Lakers lost 91-81.

The Knicks also were without their starting center as Marcus Camby sat out the final game of a five-game suspension for throwing a punch at San Antonio's Danny Ferry. Camby's backup, Kurt Thomas, also sat out with a sprained ankle. Luc Longley started for New York.

O'Neal missed a game at Denver on Nov. 18 because of a sprained left ankle and a Dec. 15 game at Vancouver when he attended his college graduation ceremony at LSU.

The arch of O'Neal's right foot has been bothering him for about a week, and he aggravated it during a victory over New Jersey on Friday. He is listed as day to day, meaning he could miss games Tuesday at Cleveland and Wednesday at Minnesota.

"If it gets to the point where I can lift off my toes, I'll play," O'Neal said.
