SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Brandon Kurtz scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half and No. 13 Tulsa pulled away for a 64-56 victory over San Jose State on Saturday night.
Tony Heard added 11 points for the Golden Hurricane (25-2, 10-1
WAC), who outshot San Jose State (13-13, 4-7) 46 percent to 37
percent en route to their fifth straight victory and 18th in 19
games. Kurtz also had 10 rebounds for Tulsa, unbeaten in nine
meetings with San Jose State.
Mike Garrett, playing his second game since becoming
academically eligible, had 13 points to lead the Spartans. Cory
Powell added 12 points.
San Jose State led by a point at the break and hung with the
taller, more physical Golden Hurricane until wearing down in the
late going.
Garrett hit 3-pointer to pull the Spartans to 41-40 with 8:40
remaining, but the Golden Hurricane then put together a decisive
12-2 run that put Tulsa up 53-42 with 5:34 left.
Dante Swanson, left wide open in the left corner, and Marcus
Hill, pulling up from the top of the key, each hit 3-pointers
during the flurry.
After Kurtz hit a turnaround jumper to tie it at 29, Eric
Griffin hit a pair of free throws to put the Spartans back on top.
But that proved to be San Jose State's final lead as the Golden
Hurricane got five straight points from David Shelton, moving in
front 34-31 .
Garrett hit a 12-foot fallaway jumper moments before halftime,
giving San Jose State a 26-25 lead after being down by five earlier
in the period.
