Shaud no fraud in Texas Tech's rout of Colorado

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Beyond the brilliant 230-yard rushing performance of freshman Shaud Williams, the Texas Tech Red Raiders blew out Colorado with the one thing that has eluded them all year -- a balanced attack.

Williams torched the Buffaloes all day, posting two touchdowns, and Tech quarterback Rob Peters threw for 181 yards and two more touchdowns in Tech's 31-10 victory Saturday.

"I guess you could say we played a complete game," said Tech coach Spike Dykes. "Offensively and defensively we got the job done. This was Peters' best game. The pass opened up the run and the run opened up the pass."

The victory marked the first Big 12 game this season in which Tech's passing and rushing totals both exceeded 150 yards.

Texas Tech (3-3 overall, 2-1 Big 12) broke the game open by scoring 17 points in the second quarter.

With 11:37 left in the half, Williams found a seam in the defense and ran 61 yards to the Colorado 19. Two plays later, Tech quarterback Rob Peters threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Jones.

Williams said the coordinated running and passing attack led to Tech's victory.

"I was able to turn up and make some good runs," Williams said. "We stepped up and Rob led us to victory. We are tired of coming out and playing food one game and then playing like we did against Oklahoma State."

Colorado couldn't seem to get past their own bumbles.

Colorado's Damen Wheeler fumbled the kickoff at the Buffaloes' 25 and Tech's Mark Washington recovered at the 27. Peters completed a 23-yard pass to Tim Baker that helped set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Williams with 8:41 left in the half.

"We turned the ball over and gave them big plays," said Colorado coach Gary Barnett. "We turned the ball over too many times and we are not a good enough football team to do that."

After stopping two more Colorado possessions, Tech put together a 10-play, 62-yard drive culminated by a 36-yard field goal by Chris Birkholz with 2:09 left in the half.

The Buffaloes (3-3, 2-1) got their only touchdown early in the third quarter after Wheeler forced Baker to fumble and Robbie Robinson recovered on the Tech 30. One play later, quarterback Mike Moschetti completed a 37-yard pass to John Minardi to make it 17-7 with 14:16 left in the third quarter.

But on Tech's next drive, Williams slipped around the left corner and ran for 66 yards to set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Peters to Jones with 12:55 left in the third.

Colorado linebacker Ty Gregorak said Williams was simply "unstoppable."

"My hat goes off to him," Gregorak said. "He had a great game and he is going to be a great player. Obviously their offensive line had a great game too."

With 12:09 left, Colorado's Jeremy Aldrich kicked a 46-yard field goal.

Williams broke off a 35-yard run, setting up his 6-yard run three plays later for a touchdown and a 31-10 lead with 9:14 to play.

Moschetti threw for 194 yards and a score.
