CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) _ Justin Hill had 184 yards of total offense, passed for one touchdown and ran for another, as Furman won its fifth straight with a 31-17 triumph over The Citadel Saturday.

The Paladins (5-1, 4-0 Southern Conference) moved into first place in the conference after Georgia Southern lost to Appalachian State, 17-16.

Furman's victory overshadowed the effort of Citadel (1-5, 0-3) freshman quarterback Drew Johnson, who rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start. He is the first Citadel player to rush for more than 100 yards this season.

Hill threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sansbury to give the Paladins the early lead, but Johnson tied the score on a 1-yard plunge.

Des Kitchings ran back the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to give the Paladins the lead for good. Kitchings had 165 all-purpose yards with two kickoff returns for 111 and three catches for 54. Hill's 2-yard scoring run made it 21-7 at halftime.

Jason Wells kicked a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter then early in the fourth turned a poor snap on a field goal attempt into a touchdown with an off-balance throw to Patrick Garner.

Louis Ivory led the Paladins on the ground with 98 yards on 21 attempts. John Thrift led the Furman defense with 16 tackles and Will Bouton was in on 14.
