JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Troy Williams threw for two touchdowns and the Southern University's defense shutdown the Southwestern Athletic Conference's top offense with a 26-14 victory over Jackson State Saturday. In what may be preview of the SWAC inaugural championship game. Southern University, (7-0), and ranked No. 5 in the latest Division I-AA poll, won their fourth straight game against the Tigers. Jackson State, ranked 17th in the I-AA poll, dropped to 4-2. The game did not count in the conference standings because of the new divisional format. Williams' 13-yard touchdown pass to Haywood Gallien and the two-point conversion pass to Michael Hayes helped Southern take a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. The Jaguars led 5-0 after the first quarter on a safety and a 28-yard field goal from Justin Mattingly. Jackson State, held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season, closed to 13-7 on an 11-yard run by Destry Wright in the second quarter. Southern went up 20-7 on Dain Lewis' 11-yard run midway through the third quarter. Williams sealed the victory with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Altervi Joubert. Jackson State, which was averaging 41 points per game and 538 yards of offense, was held to 259 total yards. Both Jackson State and Southern have won three SWAC titles during the 1990s. The Jaguars have won the last two SWAC titles.
