TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) _ J.R. Redmond ran for three touchdowns and gained 102 of his 165 rushing yards in the second half as Arizona State rallied for a 33-21 victory over Washington State on Saturday night.

Ryan Kealy threw a 1-yard pass to Todd Heap for the Sun Devils' other TD, and Stephen Baker kicked field goals of 37 and 48 yards. He had a 51-yarder wiped out by a penalty.

Deon Burnett scored on an 11-yard run and Steve Birnbaum threw an 11-yard pass to Leaford Hackett and scored on a 1-yard keeper as the Cougars (2-5, 1-3 Pac-10) built a 21-10 lead in the second quarter.

Redmond brought back the Sun Devils (4-3, 3-1) with scoring runs of 2, 6 and 3 yards and Arizona State toughened on defense in the second half, allowing Birnbaum just two completions in eight attempts in the final two quarters.

Redmond, a breakaway back with power, had a career-high 35 carries, and his longest run was for 25 yards. Along with his play, the key to Arizona State's 23 unanswered points was a short passing game featuring tight end Todd Heap.

Heap, with no catches at halftime, finished with five, and his four catches in the third quarter were essential to the comeback.

Heap's 15-yard grab on Arizona State's first possession of the quarter set up Redmond's 6-yard run that cut the Sun Devils' deficit to 21-19 3:59 into the second half.

The Cougars stopped the 2-point conversion attempt, but Kealy capped the next drive with a go-ahead throw to Heap, then found Heap in the end zone again for a conversion that made it 27-21 with 7:10 remaining in the third.

Redmond scored an insurance TD with 7:04 left in the game, and Erik Flowers and Adam Archuleta threw Birnbaum for 28 yards in sacks to stop the Cougars' final possession.

Burnett, a freshman, had 97 yards _ his third-best total of the season _ by halftime, and finished with 136 in 22 attempts. It was his third straight 100-yard game and the sixth straight in which the 18-year-old has improved his yardage total.

The Cougars, rested after an off week, were sharp from the start, scoring on their first and third possessions.

Burnett's TD came after an 80-yard drive with the opening kickoff.

On the next scoring drive, Burnett complemented the passing game with a 22-yard run that set up Hackett's scoring grab with 4:51 left in the quarter.

The big play was a run by punter Kareem Anderson, who saw the right side open and took off for 16 yards and a first down.

Baker made his first field goal with 1:37 left in the first quarter, and Redmond got the Sun Devils within 14-10 just 4:25 into the second.
