BOX SCORE
STORRS, Conn. - Quarterback Jimmie Miles hit flanker Dwaune Jones with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left Saturday to give Richmond a 28-21 victory over Connecticut. The Spiders, who had never beaten the Huskies in nine tries, improved to 5-3 and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Huskies, who have lost three straight, fell to 3-5 and 2-3 in the league. Richmond took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on an eight-yard run by Miles, his 10th rushing TD of the season. The score was set up by a 38-yard punt return by Sean Gustus to the Connecticut 29. UConn tied the score with 14:10 left in the second quarter on a three-yard TD pass from quarterback Brian Hoffmann to fullback Barry Chandler. Hoffmann put the Huskies into scoring position with a 48-yard completion to flanker John Fitzsimmons at the Richmond 14. The Spiders went ahead 14-7 at the half on a fluke 60-yard touchdown reception by Jones. The pass, which was intended for wide receiver Muneer Moore, was tipped into the air by UConn defender Jordan Younger, who appeared to have an easy interception. But the ball caromed to Jones who raced untouched into the end zone. The Huskies drew even again with 8:17 left in the third quarter on a one-yard plunge by tailback Taber Small. UConn got to the one on a diving 36-yard catch by freshman wide receiver Wes Timko on a fourth-down play. Richmond took a 21-14 lead on a five-yard run by tailback TyRonne Turner with 6:56 to go but UConn came right back to tie it on an 18-yard TD pass from Hoffmann to tight end Dan Deignan with 1:54 left to set the stage for Miles' winning TD pass to Jones.
