ALBUQUERQUE (AP) -- Matt Newton threw touchdown passes of 58 and 66 yards to Frank Rice and Deone Horinek's 72-yard third quarter punt helped Colorado State rally for a 36-22 win Saturday over New Mexico. Dominated by New Mexico in the first half, the Rams (6-3, 3-2 Mountain West) struck for 16 points in the third quarter to erase a 14-6 deficit. It was Horinek's career-best punt to the New Mexico 1 that got the Rams started. On second down, New Mexico quarterback Sean Stein was tackled in the end zone for a safety and the Lobos (3-5, 2-2) were on their heels the rest of the game. The Rams added two TDs in the final eight minutes of the quarter. The first a 2-yard run by Newton and the second on a 3-yard run by Kevin McDougal. The first score included a 45-yard pass from Newton to tight end Joey Cuppari and the second was set up by CSU linebacker David Vickers' fumble recovery of a fumble by New Mexico halfback Rishard Stafford and return to the Lobos' 29. Newton, whose 58-yard scoring pass to Rice on CSU's first play from scrimmage produced the Rams' only first down of the first half, then found Rice on the 66-yarder with 12:17 left in the game. Stein threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Germany Thompson and a 3-yard pass to Tommy Hemphill in the first half. But the Lobos, who had 223 total yards in the first half to CSU's 88, missed a 43-yard goal attempt and failed to score after recovering a CSU fumble at the Rams' 29 in the second quarter. New Mexico got within 29-22 on a 1-yard run by Jarrod Baxter with 9:39 left. Baxter's 41-yard run to the CSU 3 and a pass interference call on the Rams on fourth-and-goal were the key plays in that drive. CSU answered with a 12-yard TD run by Rice with 5:38 left. Baxter had 131 yards on 12 carries. He became the first New Mexico player in two years to run for more than 100 yards. | ALSO SEE College Football Scoreboard Colorado State Clubhouse New Mexico Clubhouse College football Top 25 overview
