SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Linebacker Patrick Chukwurah led a
defensive charge that helped Wyoming produce 23 fourth-quarter
points as the Cowboys beat Utah 43-29 in a mistake-prone game
Saturday night.
Freshman Cliff Brye had fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 16 and
21 yards as the Cowboys (5-3, 2-2 Mountain West) avoided a loss
that would have eliminated any hope of contending for the league
title.
Jay Stoner was 21-of-38 for 349 yards for Wyoming.
The Utes (6-3, 3-2) lost their second straight game but their
concerns afterward were focused on quarterback Darnell Arceneaux,
taken from the stadium in an ambulance after Chukwurah and Jared
Jernigan sacked him in the end zone.
Arceneaux fumbled and Cortney Barnes recovered to give Wyoming a
35-17 lead with 8:54 to play. Briefly unconscious, Arceneaux was
diagnosed with what team officials called "a massive concussion."
Utah, inspired by the sight of their quarterback seriously
injured, seemed ready to challenge after Arceneaux went down.
Reserve quarterback T.D. Croshaw threw an 80-yard TD strike to
Cliff Russell on the Utes' next play from scrimmage, pulling Utah
within 36-23. The Utah defense forced a punt, but Croshaw was
intercepted by Al Rich.
The Cowboys needed only four plays before Brye scored on a
21-yard run, weaving through dejected Utah defenders. The Utes
added a final TD on Croshaw's 4-yard pass to Boo Bendinger with 34
seconds left.
Until the fourth quarter, it was a sloppy game, with lots of
penalties, dropped passes and incompletions. Each team lost three
fumbles. The Cowboys had one interception and Utah threw three.
Protecting a 20-17 lead after three quarters, the Cowboys
stretched it to 22-17 with 11:35 remaining when Chukwurah blitzed
to sack Arceneaux in the end zone. Brye's 16-yard TD came on the
ensuing possession.
The Utes started the next possession deep in their own end.
Arceneaux threw incomplete and was sacked for a 2-yard loss before
Chukwurah and Jernigan collapsed on him to set up Barnes' TD.
Cowboys coach Dana Dimel, dissatisfied with his team's play in a
24-13 loss to Colorado State on Oct. 23, directed the Cowboys from
the press box. He was the third Division I coach this season to
watch from above.
Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez, recovering from a knee replacement,
and Georgia Tech's George O'Leary, serving a one-game penalty for
an infraction of NCAA rules, also coached from upstairs.
