HOUSTON (AP) _ Quarterback Jay Stuckey led two touchdown drives over the final 6:14 and Paul Smith scored three touchdowns to rally Texas-El Paso to a 30-29 victory over Rice on Saturday. The Miners (5-6, 3-3 Western Athletic Conference) trailed 29-17 when Stuckey took only 44 seconds to drive the Miners 86 yards to a 10-yard touchdown run by Smith with 6:14 left. Rice (5-6, 4-3) tried to run out the clock, once succeeding on a fourth-down play, but the Owls finally had to punt and give the Miners one more chance. This time, Stuckey directed a 78-yard drive in seven plays that took 1:17 and ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Lee Mays with 1:22 to play. The Miners ended a string of eight consecutive road losses as Stuckey was 26-of-33 for 317 yards and two touchdowns. Smith had a touchdown run of 1 yard and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass, the first of his college career. Rice quarterback Chad Richardson had rallied the Owls from a 17-16 halftime deficit with a 42-yard touchdown run with 5:12 to go in the third quarter and Clint Leschber put Rice ahead 29-17 with a 3-yard run with 1:47 left in the third quarter. The Miners, got their halftime lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Smith with 9:35 to go in the first quarter, Smith's 16-yard TD catch and a 44-yard field goal by Ricky Bishop. Rice scored 16 straight points in the second quarter on a 40-yard field goal by Derek Crabtree, an 8-yard run by Mike Gingrich and Richardson's 1-yard run. Richardson led the Owls with 165 yards on 20 carries and Smith finished with 75 yards on 20 carries for the Miners.
