TROY, Ala. (AP) _ Al Lucas rushed for two touchdowns and Brock Nutter passed for 189 yards to lead Troy State to a 27-7 victory over James Madison on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

The Trojans (11-1) held James Madison tailback Curtis Keaton to 40 yards, far below his 158-yard per game average, and allowed only one touchdown _ Keaton's 2-yard rush in the fourth quarter.

The Dukes (8-4) were hampered with problems at quarterback, losing starter Chris Paquette to a separated shoulder in the second quarter.

James Madison had already lost three quarterbacks earlier this year. Mike Connelly, still suffering from a separated shoulder suffered earlier in the season, and scout team freshman Jason Thompson carried the rest of the game, but the Dukes were never the same.

Meanwhile, Troy State's offense caught fire in the second half, scoring 17 points on top of a 10-0 halftime lead. The Trojans went 75 yards to open the second half as tailback Phillip Jones recovered fullback Thad Buttone's fumble in the end zone.

Six plays later, Thompson's pass under pressure was intercepted by Eric Sloan, who raced 47 yards before Thompson bumped him out of bounds at the 1-yard line. Lucas ran it in on the next play.

Lucas had earlier scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. The Trojans also got field goals of 46 and 22 yards from Lawrence Tynes.

James Madison had a chance to score in the first half, but Mike Glover's 37-yard field goal attempt was wide right.
