HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) _ Giovanni Carmazzi threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third as Hofstra beat Lehigh 27-15 Saturday in the first round of the Division I-AA playoff. Carmazzi finished 22-of-30 for 252 yards for third-seeded Hofstra (11-1), which won its fifth straight game. Jackson, Hofstra's career reception leader with 178, caught 11 passes for 144 yards. Jimmy Jones ran for 138 yards on 25 carries. The Flying Dutchmen advanced to play Illinois State, which beat Colgate 56-13 Saturday. Phil Stambaugh completed 30 of 44 passes for 323 yards for the Mountain Hawks (10-2), the Patriot League co-champions. Stambaugh also threw three interceptions. Hofstra held Patriot League Player of the Year Ron Jean to 52 yards on 16 carries. Lehigh jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Jason Taafe's 23-yard field goal and a 2-yard TD run by Jean. The teams traded field goals before Hoftsra ran off 24 straight points to put the game away. Carmazzi's 1-yard run capped a nine-play, 63-yard drive with 9:08 left in the second quarter to draw the Flying Dutchmen within three. He then hit Jackson on an 11-yard TD pass with 4:30 left in the first half to put Hofstra up 17-13. The Flying Dutchmen stopped Lehigh in the third quarter after the Mountain Hawks drove down to the 2-yard line. Carmazzi hit Jackson on a 6-yard score in the fourth quarter to make it 27-13.
