DALLAS -- Arkansas coach Houston Nutt received a phone call
from President Clinton on Saturday after the Razorbacks defeated
Texas 27-6 in the Cotton Bowl.
Nutt said Clinton, a former governor of Arkansas, told him he called the stop-and-go pass from Clint Stoerner to Anthony Lucas that netted 47 yards when Arkansas faced third-and-12 at its 1 early in the third quarter. "I said, 'You should have phoned earlier, I needed you throughout the first half,' " Nutt said.Six plays after the completion, Stoerner and Cedric Cobbs hooked up on a 30-yard touchdown pass that broke a 3-3 tie. "He said they had a White House full in a theater, cheering us, had a good day watching," Nutt said. "He said he loved it, loved our effort. He was just really complimentary, just very nice." He also said Clinton told him he got even with Vice President Gore on the Tennessee game earlier this year. Tennessee won 28-24 last year; Arkansas won by the same score this year. Nutt also accepted an invitation to join Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for the Cowboys' game against the New York Giants. Earlier in the week, Nutt asked Jones -- a former Razorback -- to speak to his team for a few minutes.-- Associated Press |
