NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Guiding Virginia Tech to an 11-0 regular-season record with a shot to capture its first national championship has earned Frank Beamer the Walter Camp Football Foundation Coach of the Year award.
Beamer, 53, is 88-59-2 in 13 years with the Hokies, including seven straight winning seasons, and 130-82-4 in 19 years overall. He agreed to a new contract with a seven-year annuity prior to this season after being wooed by several schools, including Clemson and South Carolina. The winningest coach in Virginia Tech history, Beamer guided his alma mater to its third Big East Conference title this season and a trip to the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4, where the Hokies will battle Florida State for the national championship. The Hokies outscored their opponents 455-116 during the regular season as they achieved their highest ranking ever. They will compete in postseason for the seventh straight campaign.
