(Editor's note: UCLA wide receiver Danny Farmer will file a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more information on Bruins sports, visit the official UCLA site.) Sept. 16, 1999 I thought we played pretty well for three quarters against Ohio State, but in the end we just made too many mistakes and they took advantage of it. It was difficult.
There were a lot of fans that were against us and it was a hostile environment. But it's always fun to walk into those situations and be the underdog and get yelled at. There were some obnoxious fans but it was fun to see how hyped they got. I think the team is going to be great now with the guys coming back from suspension. With everyone back now, there's no excuses and I think that's great. A lot of guys are just happy to get those guys back so we can have some depth and really start this season together and hopefully start on a good note. Hopefully we can get some wins here. It's definitely exciting and it's going to be interesting to see. I'm not really sure about how the team will respond on a permanent starting quarterback being named (redshirt freshman Cory Paus was named as the Bruins' quarterback this week, unseating opening-game starter Drew Bennett). You never know until game time. I'm not really sure how the team has reacted to that, but it's something that the coaches thought was the right thing to do.
As a player, I have to go and adjust, focus in and try to concentrate on catching balls from just one player. It's going to be tough but hopefully beneficial for the team. We've got Fresno State next and the Bulldogs are great. They have a lot of great athletes and some guys that coach (Bob) Toledo would have liked to recruit. It's going to be a fun game and a test for us because we're coming off a big loss. We need to really buckle down and try and play well. Hopefully we can come out with a victory so we can move ahead and be ready for the Pac-10 teams. It's going to be a great test. |
