Sept. 29, 1999

The Air Force game was a great football game, one that took great efforts from the defense, offense and the special teams to win.

We won the game 10-7 and it was primarily a defensive struggle. Our defense played very well. During the first quarter we did have a chance to score but missed a field goal, and at the end of the quarter neither team had scored.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Air Force was moving the ball and they had a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line. We came up with a big defensive play and stopped the Falcons short of the end zone. The offense then turned around and marched down field to score the only touchdown of the first half. Those two series were very big momentum swings for us.

In the second half, it was more defense. We shut them out in the third quarter but our offense was able to get a field goal to give us a 10-0 lead. They did have a drive in that quarter where they were about to score, but when Air Force's Matt Farmer caught a pass and was almost in to score, my roommate, Trent Gamble, hit him and caused a fumble that I was able to recover. That was a great moment for me in the game! It was a great feeling at the bottom of the pile, holding onto the ball with everyone grabbing, pulling and trying to get it. There was no way I was letting go of that ball.

We gave up a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and with the score now 10-7 we needed to bear down. We came up with a couple of big stops including an interception by my other roommate, Matt Lehning. The offense, meanwhile, did a great job of moving the ball and getting first downs. They did a great job of controlling the clock in the fourth quarter.

It was a win worth waiting for. It was our first Mountain West Conference game, a victory over a Top 25 team and a victory over a team that had beaten us the last two years. All these reasons made it a sweet victory.

Our fans were great! They made a lot of noise and it was awesome celebrating with them over at the stands after the game.

But, this game is now over and we have to move on to our next opponent, Idaho. The Vandals are going to be a tough team that throws the ball a lot. We must have a good week of practice and not have a let down after this big win. Even though this is not a conference game we still need to play well and add to the beginning of, hopefully, a long winning streak.
