(Editor's note: Oregon running back Reuben Droughns will share a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more information on the Ducks, visit the official Oregon site.) Oct. 20, 1999 The week off gave us a really great chance to take a break. I made a point to get away, and went down to see my little brother.
From a physical standpoint, it was obviously an important week for me to rest up some. But during the game Saturday, whether I'm completely 100 percent, you have to forget about it. Certainly, a lot of guys will be keying on me. I have to forget about it and key on my own game. During the game, one of the biggest things that helps me is finding that mental and physical groove. I know it's there the whole time, I just have to find or tap into it. I sometimes might start off slow, but it's then I have to get myself and the team psyched up, just to get going. Once I start yelling on the sidelines, you can tell I'm in the groove, not only playing well myself but for the team. I'm trying to get pumped up and get the team more aggressive. Anything I can do to get our guys hitting harder or flying down the field faster, I'll do. The bye week last week helped a lot of other people, too, not only physically, but also mentally. Obviously there were some injuries that needed to be rested up. Mentally, too, having that break refreshes you. We didn't have to think about all the assignments, plays or other things you get caught up in, where you can lose sight of the big picture. It's good to have a little fun, too, to help relax you. Now that we're back in practice, we have to approach this week with a strong attitude. The key for us will be to play aggressively against Arizona. I remember watching the game on TV last year when I was injured. They were outhustling, outhitting and outplaying us. If we can turn it around and outhustle and be extra aggressive against them, then we can compete. |
