Pacific Lutheran 19, St. John's 9

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (AP) -- Chad Johnson threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Brown in the fourth quarter as Pacific Lutheran rallied for a 19-9 victory over St. John's in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals Saturday.

It was a defensive battle with Pacific Lutheran (11-1) gaining only 230 yards total offense to 185 for St. John's (11-2).

Corey Stanger of St. John's completed only 4-of-15 passes for 46 yards and was sacked four times and intercepted once.

Johnson completed 9-of-18 passes for 72 yards and was sacked three times and intercepted twice.

St. John's took a 9-0 lead on Joe Rotondi's 21-yard field goal in the first quarter and Chris Moore's 3-yard touchdown run in the second.

Pacific Lutheran began its comeback on Jacob Croft's 4-yard TD run with 2:33 left in the first half.

Johnson hit Brown for the winning touchdown with 11:13 left in the game, and Anthony Hicks followed with a 3-yard scoring run with 4:39 left.

When the two teams met last year in the first round of the Division III playoffs, St. John's won 33-20.

Pacific Lutheran plays Trinity University of Texas in a semifinal game next Saturday.
