SAVANNAH, Tenn. -- Northwestern Oklahoma State players knew they had to pressure Georgetown's Eddie Eviston, the NAIA player of the year, to claim their first NAIA championship. The defense delivered Saturday as the No. 2 Rangers (13-0) sacked Eviston seven times and forced three second-half fumbles while the Rangers scored 34 unanswered points in the second half on the way to a 34-26 victory over the top-ranked Tigers (13-1). "We knew we had to pressure the quarterback," said linebacker Daryl Richardson, selected the game's most valuable defensive player after recording nine tackles (five for loss), two fumble recoveries and four sacks. "If we gave him time, he would pick us apart." Eviston had time to throw in the first half, completing 15-of-26 for 241 yards. He was relatively ineffective in the second half, completing one pass in the third quarter and finishing 20-of-39 for 391 yards. The Rangers made things happen in the second half after two first-half turnovers and a missed field goal may have cost them two touchdowns offensively. "It was a tale of two halves," Georgetown coach Bill Cronin said. "Everything we got in the first half, we had to work for. In the second half, we were ready to play, but Northwestern outplayed us up front." Quarterback Al Hunt, selected the game's most valuable offensive player, led the Rangers comeback. In the second half, he rushed for 80 yards, passed for 136, passed for two touchdowns and ran for one. Hunt capped a 41-yard drive after a short punt with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Christenson with 10:40 left in the third quarter. He finished with 129 yards rushing and passed for 141, completing 8-of-13. The Rangers took advantage of a fumble by Eviston at the 19 with an 8-yard touchdown run by Gary Manuel with 8:48 remaining in the period. Hunt led the Rangers on an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by Charles McBride's 1-yard run with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter. Eviston's second fumble of the second half, recovered by Richardson, led to Hunt's 4-yard touchdown run with 7:26 remaining in the game. After another short punt, Hunt got an insurance touchdown on a 73-yard pass play to Willie Spears. In the first half, Eviston drove the Tigers 65 yards on their opening possession, capping the drive with a 25-yard pass to Creed Gann on fourth-and-17. Eviston hooked up with Cody Brown for a 51-yard pass-and-run to put Georgetown ahead 14-0 with 7:30 remaining in the first half. Kevin Davis had field goals of 29 and 23 yards in the final 1:17 of the half for a 20-0 lead. |
