CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- With veteran goaltender Grant Fuhr again
looking on from the bench, the Calgary Flames won consecutive games
for the first time this season.
Backup Fred Brathwaite made his fourth straight start Tuesday night and stopped 23 shots to help the Flames beat the New York
Islanders 3-2 Tuesday night.

Brathwaite hadn't played in nearly a month before volunteering
to go down to the Saint John Flames of the AHL 10 days ago on a
two-game conditioning stint.
Since his return, Brathwaite has given up just seven goals in
four games, a string which started with back-to-back 2-1 road losses.
"When Grant is in the net, I think the guys are expecting him
to do a lot more than he can do," Brathwaite said. "With myself,
we're playing a lot better defense and not taking the goalie for
granted."
Fuhr has managed a save percentage of .862 -- among the league's
worst -- since being acquired from the St. Louis Blues in a trade
before the season began.
Valeri Bure, Jason Wiemer, and Jarome Iginla scored for Calgary,
which won two in a row at home for the first time since last March.
Steve Webb and Mathieu Biron scored for New York.
Calgary led 3-0 in the third period when the Islanders rallied,
scoring on Webb's goal at 10:04 and then again on the power play at
14:41.
"We had one bad period and it cost us the hockey game,"
Islanders coach Butch Goring said. "It's more frustrating than
anything else."
After firing just three shots at Felix Potvin in a lifeless
first period by both teams, Calgary picked up the pace in the
second, outshooting the Islanders 16-6 and opening up a 2-0 lead.
"We can't accept starts like that if we want to make the
playoffs," Bure said. "It was an embarrassing start, but the
bottom line is we found a way to win."
Bure's long backhander went off the skate of Islanders
defenseman Rich Pilon and trickled through Potvin's legs at 11:56.
At 17:37, Wiemer scored his first of the year when he stepped
over the blue-line and ripped a 50-foot slap shot past Potvin to
the stick side.
"That second goal really hurt us. I wish I could have that one back," Potvin said. "It's my job to keep those out of the net and keep us in the game longer."
Andreas Johansson made his debut for Calgary after being acquired in trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. The
former Islander assisted on Bure's goal.
