| | PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Flyers coach Roger Neilson is scheduled to enter a hospital Monday to begin a stem-cell transplant for cancer, the team announced Tuesday.
Neilson is expected to remain in Hahnemann University Hospital for about three
weeks, followed by six to eight weeks of rehabilitation, the team said in a statement.
The transplant is designed to leave Neilson free of cancer.
Neilson, 65, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma on Dec. 9.
Next week's transplant follows a large dose of chemotherapy
received last week. He stepped down from his coaching duties just
before taking that treatment.
Meanwhile, the coaching duties have been handed to assistants
Craig Ramsay, who will run the team, and Wayne Cashman. Mike
Stothers has joined the staff from the Philadelphia Phantoms, the
Flyers' affiliate in the American Hockey League. | |
