U.S. guard Houston out of China opener

SYDNEY, Australia -- New York Knicks guard Allan Houston will not play for the United States in their opening game in the men's Olympic basketball tournament on Sunday due to an injury to his shooting hand.

"Allan will not play tonight because of a sprained wrist. He is listed as day-to-day," the U.S. team's spokesman Craig Miller told Reuters.

Houston injured the wrist, on which he has already had surgery once, during a practice on Wednesday when he was driving to the basket and ran into another player.

The 29-year-old shooting guard, who had a career high average of 19.7 points per game last season, has been wearing a brace on his hand and has not scrimmaged with the team.

After Sunday's match against China, the reigning Olympic champions face Italy on Sept. 19.
