The Vikings might be getting the Cowboys at exactly the right time. With DE Chris Doleman & Co. finally starting to generate a pass rush, Minnesota should have some success against a struggling offensive line that surrendered five sacks a week ago. The Vikings, who have 11 sacks in the past three games, are starting to feed off the improved play of their offense. This is not an overly talented defense but they are starting to play much more aggressively. DSs Orlando Thomas and Robert Griffith are the two players holding this unit together. Although this defense is still giving up too many big plays, Thomas and Griffith are doing their best to mask some terrible play on the corners.

Look for the Vikings to position Thomas in the deep third of the field in order to prevent WR Rocket Ismail from burning them with the big play. Minnesota will concede the underneath passing game and hope that QB Troy Aikman will make a couple mistakes. That is usually wishful thinking but Aikman could still be feeling the effects of last week's concussion. Coach Chan Gailey has been criticized for his conservative game plan but he has little choice until some of his reserve WRs prove they can make plays.

Dallas' offense has struggled getting on track early in games all season but they must break that trend in front of a hostile Metrodome crowd. RBs Emmitt Smith and Chris Warren will face plenty of stacked looks on Monday that will require a physical game from the offensive line. Minnesota's run defense was atrocious early in last week's game at Denver but some prudent adjustments by defensive coordinator Foge Fazio stopped the bleeding. The Vikings became so obsessed with putting pressure on the quarterback that they were taking too hard of an upfield charge, especially off the edges.

One area in which the Cowboys must improve is in short-yardage situations. Dallas' third down conversion rate on the season is an impressive 42.7 percent but that figure dropped down to just 22 percent (2-of-9) last week. Minnesota is not getting the type of play they need from their linebackers. This unit needs to anticipate more quickly against the run or they will lose many battles against Dallas' mammoth line. In order for the Vikings' LBs to be effective they must use their speed to fill gaps before they are engulfed by the likes of LOG Larry Allen.

The Vikings' offense has definitely picked up with Jeff George at quarterback but there is plenty of room for improvement. For starters, George needs to find a way to get WR Randy Moss more involved. Cris Carter is quickly becoming George's go-to guy but Moss' big-play dimension has been non-existent aside from a touchdown that was called back last week.

The majority of Dallas' defensive problems stem from their inability to stop anyone on first down, which forces them to face too many second-and-short situations. To that point, the Cowboys allowed four yards or more on over half Indianapolis' first down attempts last week.

While it may sound crazy, the Vikings need to attack the perimeter of this defense -- even RDC Deion Sanders. Sanders gave up a big touchdown to Marvin Harrison a week ago and Moss has the same capabilities, as he displayed last season against Dallas on numerous "go" routes up the sideline.

Minnesota's offensive line will be facing a complex blitz scheme this week that is designed around the speed of their linebacker corps. The Vikings have done an excellent job of protecting George against the blitz but he did take a safety and two intentional grounding calls against Denver. Look for the Cowboys to go after George early because they can't afford to expose their sagging coverage too long. The Cowboys' coaching staff is alarmed at how easily their secondary was picked apart last Sunday despite consistent pressure from the guys up front.

Aside from Leroy Hoard's career-long run of 53 yards, the Vikings' ground game was ineffective for the most part. Hoard and Moe Williams offer a solid backfield contrast but the line must do a better job of consistently opening up holes. Dallas' run defense is giving up 93 yards per game but that number has been significantly lower since Sanders returned to the lineup. Deion has been more willing to attack the run than at any time in the past four or five years and it is discouraging teams from running wide outside the tackles. Minnesota's interior line is coming along but they need to be more consistent. Too many individual lapses are killing their running game.

Dallas' special teams are coming off their strongest performance of the season. KOR Jason Tucker's 50 yard return to start the second half and PR Deion Sanders' 76 yard scamper should concern the Vikings' cover teams. Dallas newcomer Lamanski Hall made his impact felt with a blocked punt that led to a Richie Cunningham field goal. The Cowboys' cover teams did nice job containing speedy Colts RS Terrence Wilkins but Minnesota's David Palmer will pose a different type of threat. Palmer doesn't possess Wilins' breakaway speed but his shiftiness will force the Cowboys to really concentrate on wrapping up instead of going for the big hit. Look for Vikings P Mitch Berger to bounce back from the worst performance of the season. Berger averaged almost seven fewer yards than his season average against the Broncos, despite the elevation in Mile High.

Key matchups
  • Dallas WR Raghib Ismail vs. Minnesota CB Jimmy Hitchcock
Ismail has become the big-play deep threat in this offense, and he will go against a secondary (and Hitchcock) that is capable of giving up some big plays. He is really the only Dallas deep threat at WR at this stage of the season, and QB Troy Aikman will look to him for big plays... Hitchcock is talented, but he tends to gamble at times and gets himself in bad position.

  • Minnesota RT Korey Stringer vs. Dallas DE Gregg Ellis
Stringer is a big massive power player who lacks a lot of range and mobility, but Ellis is in the middle of a so-so season, and has not been overly consistent. Dallas needs an edge pass rush to force Minnesota QB Jeff George to release the football early, and Ellis may be their best option.

  • Dallas TE David LaFleur vs. Minnesota SS Robert Griffith
Although LaFleur is better known as a blocker, he is becoming a little bit of a threat as a receiver, especially on third down. He is a big physical guy who doesn't separate very well, but he should be able to out-muscle Griffith in the short passing game if Aikman can get him the ball. There are no big plays here, but he could keep a drive alive.

    Dallas will win if...
  • The front four gets a consistent pass rush on Viking QB Jeff George. Although he has a firm grasp of the system for a guy that has only been with the club for six months, George can be rattled with defenders in his face. The front four has to get the job done because defensive coordinator Dave Campo does not want to rely to heavily on his blitz packages. Dallas needs all the cover men they can muster against this offense.

  • ROT Erik Williams handles the pass rush of DE John Randle. This battle of Pro Bowlers will go long way in determining the fate of Dallas' offense. With Aikman still groggy from last week's blow to the head, the Boys' offensive line has to get the job done.

  • The Cowboys can establish a running game early on in order to win the time of possession battle, keeping the explosive Viking offense on the sidelines. Dallas has done a tremendous job of this all season but it will be especially important to take the crowd out of the game in this Monday night tilt. The Metrodome crowd has had little to cheer about this season and the Vikings offense seems to feed off their energy.

    Minnesota will win if...

  • CB Kenny Wright can shut down WR Ernie Mills in man-to-man coverage, allowing FS Orlando Thomas to roll coverage to Raghib Ismail's side to give help in the deep third. The Vikings want to position Thomas deep in order to negate the long ball but that will only happen if the rookie can hold up his end of bargain.

  • Offensive coordinator Ray Sherman can create man-to-man matchups on his receiver corps. The Vikings have been using increased motion to free up Randy Moss. Minnesota has confidence that Moss will be able to duplicate last year's performance (3 rec., 163 yds., 3 TD) if they get him singled up -- even on Deion Sanders.

  • RB Leroy Hoard can take advantage of running lanes created by his explosive receiving corps' ability to stretch the Cowboy defense. Hoard is tough to bring down in the open field because he runs with great leg drive. If the Vikings can stretch the defense, the Cowboys' smallish LB's could have a hard time bringing down Hoard.

    The War Room edge
Although the Vikings are not totally in sync yet, they are getting better each week, and they are simply too explosive for the Cowboys at home. Minnesota is playing with more confidence now, while Dallas is coming off a demoralizing loss to Indianapolis. The Viking receivers should have a big day in this one, and Minnesota should roll.
