    Donald leads British Open qualifiers

    Associated Press

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland -- Luke Donald of England, coming off a sensational season in the United States, gave the British crowd something to cheer Monday with a 5-under 65 at Panmure to qualify for the British Open.

Donald, a Northwestern sophomore who won the NCAA individual title, had the lowest score among 13 qualifiers at Panmure.

Meanwhile, former U.S. Amateur champion Matt Kuchar had a 74 at Monifieth Links to finish seven strokes short of qualifying and end his streak of five consecutive majors for which he has been eligible.

Along with winning the NCAA title, Donald became the first Englishman to win the Fred Haskins Award as college golf's outstanding player.

"My game has come on a lot while I've been over there," he said. "My college has the best coaching facilities in America. For the moment I'm just happy to qualify and take one step at a time. My first aim is to make the cut."

Sweden's Per-Ulrik Johansson, a Ryder Cup player who falls just outside the exemption list, followed up his course record 63 at Montrose with a 69 to qualify comfortably.

"The gallery was even bigger than Sunday, 500 plus," he said. "It felt awkward today after shooting a 63 yesterday. I didn't have the motivation. It doesn't matter if you're No. 1 qualifier, only that you qualify."

This year's version of Justin Rose could be Zane Scotland, a 17-year-old Englishman who qualified at Downfield with rounds of 69-71. A year ago, Rose tied for fourth in the British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Others who qualified include Gabriel Hjertstedt, who the Tucson Open this year and Mike Weir of Canada, who finished second to Tiger Woods in the Western Open.

Of those who failed to qualify, perhaps none was as shocked Andrew Hare of England. He made an ace on the 175-yard 11th hole at Panmure to give himself a chance. Three holes later, to made a 10 on a par-5.

He hit a 3-wood out of bounds and hit his second drive into a bush and took a penalty stroke. He required six more strokes to finish the hole, wound up with a 74 and was out of the Open.

Anders Forsbrand of Sweden, whose opening 80 featured a 14 on one hole, didn't show up for the second round, citing a hip injury.
