Parnevik holes out for eagle

Reuters

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Jesper Parnevik ignited a spontaneous Ryder Cup celebration Friday when he holed out from 140 yards for an eagle 2 at the 378-yard eighth hole.

Parnevik opened his arms wide after his ball hit the green and bounced left into the hole, and strode toward partner Sergio Garcia, who lifted the Swede off the ground in a bear hug and carried him several joyous paces.

Once on the green, Garcia plucked the ball out of the cup, gave it a kiss and handed it to Parnevik.

The spectacular shot lifted Parnevik and Garcia into a 1-up lead over Americans Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk in their best-ball match.

Parnevik further raised European spirits, which were running high after the morning foursomes matches produced a one-point lead for the underdog Europeans, who outscored the U.S. team 2½-1½ in the alternate-shot contests.

Garcia and Parnevik had combined to beat Tiger Woods and Tom Lehman in the morning matches.

Parnevik's eagle was part of a spectacular front nine in which he went around in 6-under 29.
