Sergio Garcia and Jesper Parnevik (Europe)
vs. Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson (USA)

Paradise for 14 holes -- and then the presure set in. Mickelson and Parnevik both shot 29 on the front nine; Parnevik's included a dramatic eagle on the par-4 eighth, when he holed a 135-yard 9-iron. The Europeans led by one aftr 14, thanks to a Garcia eagle. That's when the heat was turned up to boil: Mickelson missed a 5-foot birdie putt at No. 15, all four players made routine pars at Nos. 16 and 17, and then Furyk and Parnevik both left their approach shots at 18 well short of the green. Mickelson, with a chance to halve the match, pulled the ball left. "I needed to make putts on 16 and 18 and I just didn't," Mickelson said.

Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie (Europe)
vs. Justin Leonard and Davis Love III (USA)

The passion of Ryder Cup Sunday came early to Brookline. Trailing by one at No. 13, Montgomerie drilled a crucial putt for birdie to even the match. Having watched Lawrie eagle the 14th, Love drained a bending 20-footer to keep the match even. The two sides remained even at 15 and 16 before Montgomerie stuck his approach six feet from the cup and made birdie to give the Europeans a one-hole lead after 17. But Love prevailed: needing birdie to halve the match, Love -- who lost all four of his matches two years ago at Valderrama -- drained a 30-footer. Montgomerie, with a 10-foot putt on a similar line, let his slide to the right, giving the U.S. a much-needed halve. "He had a lovely putt," said Lawrie. The Americans didn't know how lovely it would become.

Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez (Europe)
vs. Jeff Maggert and Hal Sutton (USA)

Bad news for the Americans: Olazabal felt good enough and played well enough to be a factor. Teamed with countryman Jimenez, Olazabal played a bogey-free round to give the Europeans a point that was anything but a gimmee. The Spanish armada was too much from the first hole, which Jimenez birdied to give the Europeans a lead they never surrendered. It went to two shots when Jimenez birdied the fourth and, other than a bobble at 11 when Olazabal and Jimenez both bogeyed, they were in complete control. "They key to getting on top of somebody in match play is to do it in front of them, not on top of them," said Sutton. Translation: it's tough to play from behind.

Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood (Europe)
vs. David Duval and Tiger Woods (USA)

Mismatch? Only on paper. A Woods chip-in for birdie at No. 10 gave the U.S. its only advantage, which was quickly erased by Clarke's clutch birdie on No. 11. After playing the next five holes even, Clarke hit a clutch approach to five feet on 17 and made the putt, putting the much-heralded Americans dormie. Clarke picked up points at Nos. 3, 5, 11 and 17. Woods was the last American hope on 18, but he pulled a pitching wedge into the back bunker and couldn't hole the shot. "We're going aginast No. 2 and No. 2 in the world and we managed to beat them," said Clarke. "I think for us it's a great result." Truer words have rarely been spoken.
