BROOKLINE, Mass. -- I think we played well today in my two matches, going with Tiger in both the morning alternate shot and the afternoon fourball. It was good to get out there and try to help the team get going after sitting out Friday. I was definitely ready to play some golf.
We were able to get a point in the morning, but couldn't get the other because neither one of us could hole a putt. We both did what we needed to do, which was get two chances at birdies on nearly every hole, but nothing seemed to drop.
It seemed they were right there on a whole bunch of occasions, but they weren't going down for us. And Colin (Montgomerie) and Paul (Lawrie) hit some great shots down the stretch, made some putts and that was the difference for them winning the match.
I had never, ever played a true alternate-shot match before this morning unless you count the nine holes during practice earlier this week when I couldn't put the clubface on the ball, which I'm trying to forget. I like the format and we did pretty well. Got off early to a good start winning the first three holes and then hung on for the win. It felt good to contribute, that's for sure.
I don't think anyone on this team is packing it in, but we've sure dug ourselves a hole. I would rather be two points down rather than four points, so we've got our work cut out for us on Sunday.
It has been a frustrating two days. I think everybody feels the same way, which is we haven't played the way we thought we'd play coming in here.
I'm not going to take anything away from the European team either. Those guys have played really well, coming through in a bunch of big situations with big shots when they needed them.
This is certainly not over, though. We usually play pretty well on Sunday in the singles matches. Plus most of their guys have played a bunch and should be pretty worn out, which is part of the reason we do well in singles all of the time.
So we might have an advantage there, but four points is four points. We have to win 8½ points Sunday, which is a pretty big task. But with these guys, well, we can do it. It's going to be tough, but we can do it.
I'm still excited about this. We're going to have P.F. Chang's delivered to the hotel and then I'm going to hit the bed. I'll get out here a couple of hours before my tee time (12:02 p.m. ET) and go to work.
It's going to be different than the matches we played today because it's only me. You've kind of got to play your own game and more or less not do anything crazy.
My golf is OK. I'm not making any birdies, but I can go out and par this place to death. I drop a few putts and, well, I've seen a lot of strange things happen in this game. Who knows? Based on what I just heard in our team meeting, we're going to give it everything we have. It's going to be a fight.
