U.S. gets steamrolled on first day

Friday foursome scorecards

Colin Montgomerie-Paul Lawrie (Europe)
vs. David Duval-Phil Mickelson (USA)

Montgomerie, the Ryder Cup veteran, and Lawrie, the rookie, didn't make a bogey in the alternate-shot format. Even atthe turn, the U.S. made a bogey at 10 when Duval drove the ball into the left rough and Mickelson couldn't find the green; and again at 12 when Montgomerie made a six-foot birdie putt. The Europeans found fairways and Montgomerie made birdie putts on Nos. 8 and 14. "I thought to play a U.S. Open golf course without a bogey in an alternate-shot format was certainly impressive," Mickelson said. Said Montgomerie: "The Ryder Cup brings the best out in me and I'm glad it does. I'm looking forward now to the rest of the games."

Sergio Garcia-Jesper Parnevik (Europe)
vs. Tom Lehman-Tiger Woods (USA)

Much hyped and worth the wait. The Americans got off quickly when Lehman chipped in for a birdie on No. 1 and built the edge to two holes when the Europeans bogeyed the par-4 fifth. But a U.S. bogey on No. 6 and an European birdie on No. 7 (Parnevik made the putt) left the match even through 11. Woods air-mailed a 55-foot putt on 12, forcing a three-putt bogey, and Parnevik finished off the match with an 8-foot birdie on No. 17. "It's frustrating when you play well and don't win," Woods said. Said Garcia: "Here it's Europe against the USA; it's not Sergio against Tiger. Everybody needs to understand that."

Miguel Angel Jimenez-Padraig Harrington (Europe)
vs. Davis Love III-Payne Stewart (USA)

The two European rookies never panicked against veterans Stewart and Love. The U.S. put on the heat early with back-to-back birdies on No. 3 (Stewart made a 3-foot putt) and No. 4 (Jimenez missed the green with his approach). But the Europeans steadied themselves, getting a shot back with a birdie at the sixth (Harrington tapped in from a foot) and evening the match with a birdie on No. 10. The U.S. bogeyed No. 12 and appeared to be in trouble until Love hit a crucial par putt on the 17th after Jimenez took his team out of the hole with an errant drive. Harrington missed a 7-footer on the 18th that could have won the match. "I felt a little bit of pressure out there today that I don't normally feel," said Love, "and I kind of let it get away from us. We're just happy to get a half but unhappy that we didn't win."

Darren Clarke-Lee Westwood (Europe)
vs. Jeff Maggert-Hal Sutton (USA)

Sutton and Maggert seemed to be in trouble early, but a three-hole streak of one-putt birdies (Nos. 6, 7 and 8) gave the Americans a comfortable win -- their only one of the morning matches. Sutton putted well and the steady Maggert put the ball in position when he had the chance. Westwood and Clarke didn't play poorly; Maggert and Sutton were just too steady. "Our games really match up so well together," said Maggert. "I feel really comfortable playing with Hal."
