European rookie Park still in the hunt

Reuters

HEXHAM, England -- Britons David Carter and David Park turned the European Grand Prix into a near-match play confrontation after storming six shots clear of their rivals in Saturday's third round.

Englishman Carter shot a 68 and finished his round at Slaley Hall with a 30-foot birdie putt. Welshman Park three-putted for bogey and his 70 left him level top with Carter on 14-under-par 202.

Park can still equal a 22-year-old record by winning in only his second European Tour event, but his final hole blemish caused a two-shot swing to make his bid rather harder.

Australian Peter O'Malley led the chase on 208 after a 71.

Lee Westwood of England enjoyed his best round since the Desert Classic in Dubai in February, a 67 boosting him into a share of fourth place.

Park, who had established a four-shot advantage with birdies at three of the first four holes, seemed to have the edge when he went to the last two strokes ahead after birdies on 16 and 17.

"It was an exciting afternoon and you have to admire David's determination for someone so young on the tour," said playing partner Carter, who defends the Irish Open title next week, his maiden win on the European Tour.

Park led the Moroccan Open by three shots with two holes to play last Sunday but he finally missed out on a unique European Tour debut triumph when he lost a six-hole playoff to Miguel Martin of Spain.

"I'm aware of what winning will mean," said Park, "and I'm also aware that second place, even third, will mean my full tour card.

England's Justin Rose faded badly after making his first full tour cut in 22 attempts on Friday. He slumped to an 82 after dropping six shots on the first five holes, three-putted four times by the eighth and then ran up a triple bogey at the 16th.

Rose's bleak day was completed when he was warned for slow play.
