Senior Tour caddie killed in accident

Associated Press

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The caddie for Senior PGA Tour golfer Dale Douglass was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a car while crossing U.S. Highway 1 in Juno Beach.

Paul "Cowboy" Dayhoff, 55, of Dallas, had caddied for Douglass the last 12 years and was in the area to work the PGA Seniors Championship, which started Thursday at PGA National. Douglass withdrew from the tournament Wednesday.

"We've been together since the summer of '87," Douglass said. "Cowboy's always been very popular with everybody.

"The galleries looked for him. He liked to interact with spectators and he'd always go around in a cowboy hat. He looked his part. I'm going to miss him dearly."

Dayhoff was returning to his hotel after eating dinner with Lee Trevino's caddy, Ralph Hackett. He was struck by a car as he tried to cross U.S. 1. No charges were filed against the driver.

Dayhoff is survived by his wife, Karen.
