PGA thinking of moving Seniors Championship

Associated Press

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The PGA Seniors Championship may begin rotating sites as early as 2001 in an effort to increase interest in senior golf's oldest major championship.

The tournament, now in its 60th year, would likely be moved to the first or second week in June. It's being played this week at PGA National for the 17th year in a row.

Past champions read like a who's who of golf -- Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino -- but attendance has sagged in recent years.

"We think we need to move to different venues and different markets to expose the tournament to a new crowd," said Jim Awtrey, PGA chief executive officer. "It's reached the point where it's been here so long, it needs to move out and re-establish that major status you get by going into other markets and exposing the tournament."

Awtrey said he believes the tournament could double its attendance to as much as 30,000 a day at new sites in the north.

"There are a lot of places they could play this where they would get much greater support," Senior Tour veteran Tom Weiskopf said. 'This market is saturated with regular tour, Senior PGA Tour and LPGA events."
