Scouting Report
 2000 Season
Injuries limited Walt Weiss to 192 at-bats last year, his lowest total since 1991. Weiss' strained hamstring in May, sprained thumb in June and strained knee ligament in July and August meant rookie Rafael Furcal saw most of the activity at shortstop for the Braves.

 Hitting, Baserunning & Defense
Weiss had difficulty getting into a groove at the plate last year. Despite his minimal power, he remains a capable offensive producer while hitting in the difficult eighth slot in the lineup. His calling card remains his glove, which is one of the steadiest in the majors. He has an uncanny ability to anticipate plays and make strong, accurate throws. Weiss is a smart baserunner who compensates for average speed with his knowledge on the basepaths.

 2001 Outlook
An inability to stay healthy and the loss of a step on defense left Weiss contemplating retirement at the end of last season. He's a free agent, and Atlanta appears set with Furcal at shortstop, provided a high-profile acquisition isn't made. That acquisition will not be Weiss, who should expect nothing more than a part-time role with another team.
