Scouting Report
1999 Season Injuries resulted in Donovan Osborne being the Cardinals' Opening Day pitcher. It was all downhill from there, though, as Osborne ended up making only six ineffective starts before having his season shut down by shoulder problems. In late May he had arthroscopic surgery to relieve arthritic pain in the joint.
Pitching & Defense If he ever could stay healthy, Osborne has the stuff to be a big winner. He moves his low-90s fastball around the strike zone and has an excellent changeup, which he can turn over and sink away from righthanders. He also throws a slider, which he tends to hang, and he's prone to nibbling and running long counts. Osborne has an excellent pickoff move to first and can swing the bat.
2000 Outlook Osborne isn't expected to pitch until late spring. And because he has worked a total of just 193.1 innings the past three seasons, he's a high-risk investment for any team. The Cardinals kept hoping for a return to his 1996 form, but they finally gave up on him. They won't re-sign him as a free agent.
