As the 1999 season unfolded for Frank Solich and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the most unanswered question of who would play quarterback still loomed large in the minds of players and fans. After a spirited battle for the position in the spring, it appeared that Bobby Newcombe would get the nod over Eric Crouch.

The situation bothered Crouch so much that he comtemplated leaving the 'Huskers until Solich made a personal visit and assured him that all was not lost. As the season started, Solich tried in vain to do what other coaches have also tried without much success: playing two quarterbacks. Early games looked like the merry-go-round tandem would never settle the question. Newcombe could make the spectacular play, but created turnovers for the offense.

Crouch, while being less flashy, did have the execution of the option offense well-versed and was able to move the chains. Solich even tried playing them at the same time when Newcombe threw a quick screen to Crouch that resulted in a dramatic dash for the end zone. That single play may have turned the heads of everyone connected with the Nebraska team. It showed that Crouch could make the big play and was a dynamic runner in the open field when given the chance.

Nebraska football has always been built around a great defense, solid kicking game and the most bone-crushing, rock-hard option offense in college football. Playing in quarterback in such a system takes more than good looks. Crouch carried the ball more than anyone for the Cornhuskers this season and got up every time the opponents slammed him to the turf. There he is faking to the fullback and following him into the line for the tough first down, or slithering away on the end for the big play when it develops.

When the defense overplays its ground, Crouch can make the play-action pass a lethal weapon with a quick score from anywhere on the field. He clearly makes the entire offense operate with the high-level efficiency required. Even more than playing quarterback, Crouch is the motivational leader for the 'Huskers. You can find him moving up and down the sidelines, encouraging teammates and plotting strategies with coaches. His stubborn tenacity on the field carries over to everyone. Nebraska will play great defense; they will win if Crouch can play his style of dashing, daring football on offense.

As Tee Martin goes, so go the Tennessee Volunteers. He is the heart of their football team because he gives them the leadership they need.

Martin, now a two-year starter, is a veteran quarterback. Obviously, he has a great win-loss record (22-2) and a national championship to his credit. Against Nebraska, it will be important how well he plays because everything revolves around him in the Tennessee offense.

Before Martin, Peyton Manning did a lot of checking and audibling at the line of scrimmage. They allow Martin to do the same things as Manning. Everything revolves around him being a good game manager at the line of scrimmage.

The college quarterback has evolved the last five years, with more plays being called at the line -- more checks to a pass or run against defensive fronts. Martin is one of the best in the country at getting out of a bad play into a good one. His decisions have made the Tennessee offense operate at a higher level. Nebraska will give Martin a variety of looks, playing the linebackers up close to the guards. So Martin will need to check the Vols into the right play.

Tennessee has thrived on Martin's play-action passing; that's how the Vols won their national title game against Florida State. I think he is an All-American quarterback, but he hasn't gotten his due at Tennessee. His numbers aren't as gaudy as those for other quarterbacks, but if you take Martin away from the Vols' offense, they wouldn't be nearly as effective as they have been the last two years.

He is a team player all the way. Martin can run the football and throw the football to whoever can make plays. He is about one three-letter word: W-I-N. He sat and watched and waited his turn. He wasn't going to transfer out of Tennessee. He did everything right in his career, and that's why you like to see good things happen for him.
