Playing to your potential

(Editor's note: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops will file a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more on Sooners sports, visit the official Oklahoma site.)

Sept. 22, 1999

We're anxious to get on to Louisville. It's a team we recognize as a top 25 team coming into the season. The Cardinals probably have as good a quarterback (Chris Redman) as there is in the country. They're scoring more points than anybody in the country. We're anxious to go on the road and see what we can do.

Bob Stoops has revived Oklahoma football in his first year.

Hopefully, we'll be able to play good, solid defense and they won't score as many points as they have been. They've been very productive with their offense. I'm not real fond of giving up a lot of points.

We recognize they've done an excellent job running the football. In their first game against Kentucky, Louisville really hurt the Wildcats' ability to run the ball. You've got to be strong against the run and disrupt their balance. Of course, Chris Redman can throw the football, and when you force him to throw, you've got to be able to make plays on him and get some pressure on him. But you've got to be able to stop the run as well.

Pressuring Redman is one of the main keys for the defense this week. In order to put pressure on him, you've got to get a good break on some throws to break up some balls and come up with an interception here and there.

Where do we think we're better than Louisville? I'm not sure we are. We'll have to go out there and see. We have to see how we matchup. I believe we matchup really well with them in all parts of the game.

Moving on

I believe one of the strong points on our team is the secondary, and you know this will be a great challenge for them as well as our backers.

The game against Baylor on Saturday was another good win. It's a good situation when you can go into your locker room after winning 41-10 in the Big 12 and know that none of your players are overly excited or your coaches are mad.

I felt we played well, but I'm angry. We can play a lot better and need to. I'm not concerned with the margin of victory. What I'm concerned with is us playing to our potential and playing the best we can.
