Poor Pac-10 start a product of parity

(Editor's note: UCLA wide receiver Danny Farmer will file a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more information on Bruins sports, visit the official UCLA site.)

Sept. 22, 1999

We have a very tough game this weekend against Stanford. The Cardinal struggled earlier this year against Texas, but with all the people they have returning, I think that loss was kind of a wake-up call for them.

I think they are going to come out ready to play against UCLA because we are one of their biggest rivals. This is definitely going to be a tougher game than most people think. I'm not surprised at what they did in Arizona because they are a great football team.

Against Texas, I think Texas just came out ready to play and I guess Stanford didn't. We're going to be ready for the Stanford team that played the last two weeks against Washington State and Arizona because they are very tough both offensively and defensively. They have a very well-rounded team and it's going to be just a great game, going up there and playing them in their home stadium.

As far as the Pac-10 goes, although the conference has struggled a bit during the beginning part of the season, I don't think it's a down year for the Pac-10 at all. I think that there are a lot of great teams in college football this year, especially with the limited scholarships now. A lot of these teams that have beaten Pac-10 teams have up-and-coming programs.

There is more parity in college football now. You look at New Mexico State and Air Force and those are teams that are on the rise. I think it just shows that college football is spreading out and getting to every single university across the country.

In regards to playing both volleyball and football, I don't know what's going to happen with volleyball. Football has become my No. 1 priority. I think there is a bigger opportunity and a better opportunity for me to go and play football.

I'm not keeping volleyball out of my aspirations, but I think that as of right now football is No. 1 and I'll take it one day at a time. I'll just keep volleyball in the back for now and continue to practice at the beach or whatever and just try and get better, but football right now is at the top of my priorities.

In my spare time, what I enjoy doing most is staying active. If I have a day off, I like to go out and compete in sports, whether it's tennis, golf, anything. I like to go out and stay active and stay competitive because I think that is what I was born to do.

I also enjoy going to the beach a lot. It's very relaxing to be able to just go out and lie down or whatever. Basically, in my spare time I like to go out and stay active and remain at a competitive level.
