WASHINGTON (AP) -- Peter Bondra scored two goals and Adam Oates had three assists. On this night, however, the Capitals' big guns provided only a portion of the offense, which goes a long way toward explaining Washington's hottest streak in more than a decade.

Chris Simon also had two goals as the Capitals got points from 12 players Monday night in an 8-2 rout of Tampa Bay.

Washington's 7-0-1 stretch is its longest unbeaten streak since an eight-game run in March 1989. Olaf Kolzig made 24 saves for Washington, 9-1-3 since Dec. 22.

"We're just more together as a team. Everyone is trusting everybody and no one is trying to be an individual," Kolzig said. "We're getting solid defensive play, solid goaltending and everyone up front is chipping in. We're not just relying on Peter Bondra and Adam Oates."

For years, Bondra has been the go-to guy for the defense-oriented Capitals. But he missed the first six games of the streak with a knee injury, and Washington managed just fine without him.

"All the lines are scoring now, even our fourth line," Bondra said. "It's been a lot of fun. Now we have to keep it up."

Darcy Tucker and Fredrik Modin scored for the Lightning, who have lost five straight.

Tampa Bay goalie Dan Cloutier, returning from a four-game suspension for a kicking incident, limited the Capitals to one goal through the opening 31 minutes. But he was rendered helpless during a three-goal flurry in the second period that enabled Washington to pull out of a 1-1 tie.

Minutes before the scoring binge, Oates missed an open net with Tampa Bay on the power play. But Steve Konowalchuk put Washington ahead for good by beating Pavel Kubina to the rebound of a shot by Brendan Witt, who entered the zone after taking a pass from Oates.

Simon made it 3-1 at 14:55, recording his 14th goal off a crossing pass from Oates. Washington scored again 23 seconds later, with Oates getting the second assist when Sergei Gonchar tapped a rebound past the prone Cloutier.

"It was 2-1 and the next thing you know it was 5-1," Cloutier said. "I don't think I've ever been scored on eight times in my life. What do you do?"

The Capitals added four goals in the third period, including one each by Bondra and Simon. Bondra has 32 goals in 31 career games against Tampa Bay.

"It's been a long time since we realized what it takes to win," Tucker said. "It's 2-1 and we get a goal scored on us and you look down the bench and you have 20 guys hanging their heads between their legs. We're not rallying around each other and not making the plays that need to be made."

Bondra put Washington up 1-0 by jamming in a rebound at 4:47 of the first period.

Late in the period, Cloutier stopped an unobstructed blast from the slot by Gonchar to keep Tampa Bay within striking distance. Tucker then tied it at 1:07 of the second period with a wrist shot from the right circle.
