KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Steve Washburn's shorthanded goal with 4:05 to play in regulation capped a special teams explosion and gave the Nashville Predators a 4-4 tie with the Florida Panthers. Washburn intercepted a pass by Florida goalie Ryan Bach and beat the netminder, offsetting Rob Niedermayer's power-play goal at the 13:27 mark that gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead. It was the fifth straight power-play tally of the contest. The game was played before a crowd of 3,502 at Knoxville Coliseum, about three hours from Nashville and home to a United Hockey League team. The Predators scored three power-play goals in a 91-second span of the second period to take the lead. Rich Brennan scored 5:28 into the session and Greg Johnson scored a pair of goals just 43 seconds apart, giving Nashville a 3-2 lead with 13:01 left. Mark Parrish lifted the Panthers into a 3-3 tie with his first preseason goal with 3:45 remaining in the middle period. Parrish also assisted on two goals. Florida took a 2-0 lead just over a minute into the second period on goals by Mike Wilson and Filip Kuba.
