Speed is key to lag putting

By Andy North
ESPN

The greens are fairly big this week at English Turn, with large mounds and ridges. Lag putting will be essential if a player plans to do well this week.

In lag putting, too often players get so concerned with the line. You see amateurs hit putts that rim out the hole or just go by the edge of the hole by six or eight feet, and they think that's a good putt. It's still six to eight feet from the hole.

When you're thinking about lag-putting -- and that would be from 30 feet or longer -- you're just trying to get the ball three to four feet from the hole. Speed is what you need to work on.

You need to go out on a practice green, and not necessarily putt for a hole. Put three or four balls down and just practice hitting the ball 30 feet, or 45 feet, or 60 feet. Practice putting different lengths to get a feel for how hard you have to make your putting stroke to make it go that distance.

Then forget about just trying to make putts from those lengths. Try to get good speed and consistent distance. If you do that, your lag putting will be fine.
