Getting high

By Andy North
ESPN

If you assume the weather is good and the course will be playing hard and fast at the Memorial, watch for the players who hit the ball very high to do well.

The way you hit the ball high is you don't try to help the ball into the air and lift it. When you try to lift the ball into the air by adding loft to your club, which most amateurs do, they either hit it fat or top it.

The players who hit it high are the ones who hit it hard and really hit down through the ball. If you hit the ball properly, the harder it's hit, the more spin you'll put on it and the higher it will go.

When trying to hit the ball higher, you might want to move the ball up in your stance a little bit, but make sure you hit down on the ball as opposed to hitting up on it. It can be a pretty big adjustment for someone who doesn't have a tendency to hit the ball high.

Jack Nicklaus is the best who's ever played at being able to hit the ball way up in the air and have it come down like he's dropped it out of his pocket. It doesn't matter how hard the green is if the ball is coming straight down. It'll bounce straight up and down until it stops bouncing.
