Working the ball is a simple task

By Andy North
ESPN

Knowing how to play a hook or a fade is important at the Colonial. The easiest way to try to curve the ball is if you want to hook it, for example, you don't want to try to change your swing or your grip. You want to change the path that the club goes through within the hitting area.

You keep the clubface still square to your intended line of flight, but you aim to the right. By doing that, you're going to impart right to left spin on the ball. That's what will make the ball hook.

If you want it to fade, you keep your clubface square and you open your stance. Now the club will cut across the ball and you'll hit the ball with left to right spin.

Try to keep it simple. Don't try to do too many things. Work the ball the direction the dogleg is going.

Players will work on curving the ball quite a bit before a tournament like the Colonial. They'll practice it on the driving range, and they'll visualize what shots they'll need to make on the course.
