BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Flyers looked very much like a team playing its fifth game in as many nights. Jeff Toms and James Black both scored twice, leading the Washington Capitals to an 8-2 exhibition rout of the Flyers, who rested many of their top players and used a handful of minor leaguers. Toms' goal with 7:56 left in the opening period gave the Capitals a 2-0 lead. He scored again midway through the third to make it 7-2. Black had a pair of power-play tallies in a three-goal second period for Washington, which improved to 5-1 in exhibition play. Jeff Halpern, Jaroslav Svejkovsky, Glen Metropolit and Steve Konowalchuk also scored for the Caps, who play their final preseason contest on Tuesday against Carolina. Mike Maneluk and Brian Wesenberg scored for the Flyers, who rested stars Eric Lindros and John LeClair and played without injured regulars Rod Brind'Amour, Valeri Zelepukin and Keith Jones. Philadelphia completes its stretch of six games in six days on Tuesday, wrapping up the exhibition slate at Detroit.
