The comeback of comebacks![]() | ||
Paul Lawrie began the final round of the British Open 10 strokes off the lead. He leaves Carnoustie as Open champion after winning a four-hole playoff with Jean Van de Velde and Justin Leonard, capping the largest Sunday comeback in any major. Lawrie shot a tournament-best 67 Sunday, then birdied the final two holes in the playoff. It was a bitter defeat for Van de Velde, who made triple-bogey on the 72nd hole to lose the tournament.
